Worshipping place... The unveiling of a Sikh Temple in Parkmore takes place on 22 November. |
This temple will be the worshipping place for Sikhs, the disciples of Guru Nanak. The Sikh philosophy is focused on service to mankind, social justice and honesty in conduct and livelihood. It recognises all religions as valid paths to enlightenment and rejects any discrimination according to class, race, religion or gender.
The official launch and unveiling of the temple will start at 10am on 22 November and conclude at 2pm.
The alignment between the tenets of the Sikh faith and the precepts of the South African Constitution prompted the invitation of prominent members of government and respected community and national leaders to the unveiling.
The celebration will begin at 6am on 20 November and end at 6am on 22 November, during which the Guru Granth Sahib (the Sikh scripture) will be read in a single continuous ceremony lasting 48 hours. This reading is called ‘Akhand Path’ and must be uninterrupted. This is achieved by a relay of recitations by consecutive readers.
Guests are welcome to visit and take part in the ceremony over the course of the weekend and share in the special occasion, or community meals, that will be held for the participants and guests.
