WASHINGTON, DC, April 23, 2010 – Thousands of Americans will hear prayer from Sikh tradition and four other major religions as they gather to mark the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, which will include appearances from Sting, John Legend, Hollywood Director and maker of blockbuster movie, Avatar, James Cameron, Reverend Jesse Jackson and other artists and thought-leaders who will perform and speak at The Climate Rally on the National Mall in Washington, DC.

From tree plantings and school greenings to environmental rallies, live music events and community dialogues with elected officials, more than one billion people are taking action for Earth Day to fight climate change and build a global green economy.

Dr. Rajwant Singh, Chairman of Sikh Council on Religion and Education and international convener of EcoSikh Initiative, said, "It is important that we, as Sikhs, participate in this issue critical to entire humanity."

In Washington DC, the epicenter for the first Earth Day in 1970, Earth Day events on the National Mall will once again act as a rallying point for the nation. Global thought leaders, elected officials, Olympic athletes and celebrities including Sting, John Legend, The Roots, Bob Weir, Patrick Stump, Mavis Staples, Passion Pit, Q-Tip and Booker T will bring the 40th anniversary of Earth Day and the issue of climate change to an international stage.

“Forty years after the first Earth Day, we are galvanizing people across the globe around this milestone to take action for the environment and find solutions to climate change,” said Kathleen Rogers, President, Earth Day Network. “Together, we will issue the call to our elected leaders to take action that will equitably and effectively address climate change.”

Earth Day Network and its partners are orchestrating large events in Washington, D.C., New York City, NY, Rabat, Morocco, Kolkata-India, Buenos Aires, Argentina and Tokyo-Japan.

Last year, Sikhs have launched an EcoSikh initiative as a five year community plan to combat global warming.
