- What would you do if you saw a person lying in the street and not breathing?
- What would you do if your relative was having a heart attack?
These are situations that we could all be faced with...do you know how to deal with these?
Cardiac arrest, also known as cardiopulmonary arrest, is the cessation of normal circulation of the blood due to failure of the heart to contract effectively. Unexpected cardiac arrest can lead to death within minutes. Early CPR - improves the flow of blood and of oxygen to vital organs - an essential component of treating a cardiac arrest.
In order to raise awareness and teach CPR, the 'Khalsa Save A Life Campaign' was started by a group of doctors and non-medical professions from the West Midlands, UK. The 'Khalsa Save a Life Campaign' is part of the Institute of Medical excellence (I.M.E).
The first course took place in Wolverhampton on 26th October 2013 at the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple, Duncan Street in conjunction with the British Heart Foundation. It was attended by members of the community of all ages including children and adults. With information and teaching being translated in both English and Punjabi by Dr Jaswant Singh Sumal - Specialist registrar in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine.
The next event is being held at Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick on Saturday 7th Dec 2012 from 12pm-2pm. The courses are held free of charge with all organisers working on an entirely voluntary basis, donating their own time and expertise to carry out this important educational sewa. Further events are being staged at schools in November and December.
Doctors in the 'Khalsa Save a Life' campaign have been involved in the care of many patients who may have survived or had better outcomes, if members of the general public were able to provide good pre-hospital basic medical care including CPR. As a group we have decided to organise this campaign to teach these skills to the general public.
