The Dastaar Project

Sometimes, a Dastaar is part of a moment we never forget. A stranger starts a conversation, someone offers help without being asked, or a friendship begins in an unexpected place. A person traveling thousands of miles from home may suddenly feel less alone because they recognize something familiar. These moments may seem small, but they stay with us, and The Dastaar Project is an effort to collect and preserve these positive stories from around the world.

The Stories We Rarely Record

We often speak about the Dastaar through the lens of Sikh history, identity, faith and resilience. Those stories are essential, but there is another collection of stories all around us: the everyday moments in which the Dastaar is simply present when something meaningful happens between people. A family member once shared a story from the floods in Assam, where, in the middle of uncertainty, someone recognized Sikh volunteers by their Dastaars and knew that they would be looked after. It was a simple moment of recognition, but behind it was something much larger: trust built through generations of seva.

There are stories of people arriving in unfamiliar cities and finding an unexpected connection, as well as conversations that begin at airports and railway stations. There are stories of children answering thoughtful questions from classmates and friendships that began because someone was curious enough to say hello. There are also stories passed down by parents and grandparents that may never have been written down at all. The Dastaar Project wants to preserve these moments before they disappear.

What Are We Looking For?

Your story does not need to be extraordinary. In fact, some of the most meaningful stories are remarkably simple: perhaps someone remembered you years later because of your Dastaar, or perhaps it led to an unexpected conversation or friendship. Maybe you witnessed an act of kindness, trust or understanding, or there is a story your parents or grandparents have told you for years. Perhaps someone else's Dastaar made you feel welcomed, reassured or connected when you needed it most; if it is a positive story connected to the Dastaar, we would love to hear it.

Creating a Living Archive

The goal of The Dastaar Project is to bring these stories together from different countries, cultures and generations and preserve them as a collective record. Selected stories will become part of a planned book, creating something that future generations can read and recognize themselves in. Over time, the stories may also find life through other storytelling formats. Because while each experience belongs to an individual, together they tell a much bigger story about connection, kindness, trust, seva and belonging.

Share Your Story

Think back: is there a moment involving a Dastaar that has stayed with you? It may have happened yesterday or fifty years ago, and it may be your own experience or a story that has been told in your family for generations. We would be honored to preserve it.
