A Sikh; Barack Obama in Canada, as Britain lags behind even without a Junior Minister (OPINION)

News Source: www.emgonline.co.uk

It would appear the recent victory Navdeep Singh Bains MP has encouraged Canadian Sikh not only to welcome this but to consider if Canada is ready for a Sikh Prime Minister.
Whilst the so called World leaders such as Britain do not even have a Junior Minister, let alone a Minister for the Labour Party.

Someone who identifies themselves as ‘Jodha’ posted the message below on thelangarhall.com:

I was waiting until after the election to write this post as I didn’t want my personal thoughts to be in anyway seen as promotion or endorsement.

I have been a fan of Navdeep Singh Bains for many years now. I still remember his victory into the Canadian parliament as the first Amritdhari Sikh 4 years ago and I believe the youngest elected Liberal MP (26 years old) at that time. My respect for him grew, in what I believe, was his principled opposition to an overstretching then-Jathedar Vedanti on the issue of same-sex marriages.
Well many Sikhs as well as many others Canadians in the Mississauga-Brampton South riding, continue to support and ‘accept’ Navdeep. Just this month he successfully won his third term.

Despite the Conservative Party in Canada’s continued ascendance and stronger showing in this election (certain recounts are still occurring, but the Conservative Party has 143 of the 308, still short of the 155 needed to form a majority government), the 3 Sikh Liberal MPs of the Toronto area all maintained their seats – Navdeep Bains, Ruby Dhalla (beat Conservative Parm Gill by a narrow 718 votes), and Gurbax Malhi. In all, the Sikh-Canadians, increased their contingents from 7 to 8 MPs after this election. (Navdeep Bains, Ruby Dhalla, Gurbax Malhi, Ujjal Dosanjh, Sukh Dhaliwal, Nina Grewal, and newly-elected Devinder Shory and Tim Uppal).

Tim Singh Uppal is from Calgary Edmonton (thanks Phulkari). Uppal is a member of the Conservate Party, is the third turbaned Sikh Member of Parliament, and the second Amritdhari after Navdeep. He also has a very nice kulhi dhari.

Also of significant note, Vancouver South’s Ujjal Dosanjh squeaked a victory in his riding, after an automatic recount, winning by only 22 votes. Dosanjh seems now to have his sights on the race to become leader of the Liberal Party. Still many are critical of Dosanjh’s inability to speak French as a detriment to such aspirations.

Navdeep Bains, however, seems to be his way to learning French. He has spent recent time studying French in Montreal. Such a skill may serve him well in the future. Although the Liberals will still have to wait for some time for improved election results, some senior Liberal party members see him as having the potential, as one stated, Sikhdom will be hoping and waiting.

Still I can’t help but leave you all with one possible musing: when we look at the way that many Americans have rallied behind their perception of Barack Obama as a symbol of ‘change’ and a changing America, could Navdeep Singh Bains play this same role in a future Canada?…..yes, I know the PM is not an elected position.

im sorry but the title of

im sorry but the title of this is sooo insulting. we have much much bigger problems in the UK and i think a sikh in these kind of parliamentary positions would not be quite what you expected. maybe one of our many turbaned but shaved friends who goes to the pub for a casual drink.

Don't be a pessimist.

Manvir Singh ji, You are underestimating Amritdhari Sikhs. By Guru grace Sabaat Soorat Sikhs have done very well in all fields all over the world. And you will see S. Navdeep Singh excel in the near future. Guru Gobind Singh cares for his Khalsa and is always with the Khalsa so don' be a pessimist. 'Singh sajo te Chardi Kala wich raho'.

BEING A SIKH MEANS *SINGH" SHOULD BE USED AT ALL TIMES

While I am proud and congratulate the Canadian Sikhs of having Sikh MP's in the parliament, what I don't understand is why do they all not have a SINGH behind their names, instead they sound more like hindu names like this:(Navdeep Bains, Ruby Dhalla, Gurbax Malhi, Ujjal Dosanjh, Sukh Dhaliwal, Nina Grewal, and newly-elected Devinder Shory and Tim Uppal). When the Khalsa panth was created by our 10th Guru, SINGH was given to all those who choose the path of our Guru but of late I have noticed a lot of people claiming to be Sikhs use their names without the SINGH prefering to use their family names. I wonder whether this was preached by our Gurus or we are not comfortable in using the SINGH in the western, American and Canadian community. In my country we proudly use SINGH with all our names no matter what the situation is. So let's stop this practice of using just the family name and discarding the name given to all Sikhs, i.e SINGH AND KAUR. Be proud of it. WAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA WAHEGURU JI KI FATEH

Congratulations to Canadian Sikhs and Sikhs worldwide

It is indeed a great day for Canadian Sikhs and Sikhs all over the world that there are significant number of Sikh MP's in the Canadian parliament, including an Amritdhari Sikh,as we are told.Guru Jee said,"Jab lag Khalsa rahe niara, tab lag tej diun main saara,..."meaning,"As long as Khalsa remains distinct,I shall bestow all my power on him...".One just has to think about Guru's fantastic "power" in order to imagine what a Khalsa under His blessing can do.Raj or empire is nothing.Prominent positions are nothing.Occult powers all follow around the faithful Sikhs like obedient slaves at his bidding. And to be a true Singh is to be the paragon of perfection(both worldly and divine) as a human being. All achievements thereafter lie at his feet. But a true Sikh cares not for glory.Same for Kaurs.Guru is great.Let's forever thank him.Not even for a moment should we forget our great Guru.It is all his blessing.I only wish to pray for Navdeep Singh to be perfect in Baana,Baani,Seva and Simran.WJKK,WJKF!

Navdeep Singh Bains Rising Star

Well said,we as sikhs should be proud of our heritage and Navdeep is the prime example of what we need today and also for the future of sikhs. We all should be proud of this young and energatic sikh Member of Parliament. May the blessings of Great Lord Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji be with him all the time.
