Akal Takhat directs Sikh Groups to file 1984 Genocide Petition with UN

Amritsar (October 21, 2103): On the 29th year of 1984 genocidal attacks on Sikh community, Sri Akal Takhat Sahib Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh issued a historic edict directing the Sikh groups to submit a “Genocide Petition” with the United Nations in Geneva on November 01, 2013. “I ask All India Sikhs Students Federation (AISSF) and ‘Sikhs for Justice’ (SFJ) who have collected million signatures on “Sikh Genocide” petition to file it with United Nations on November 1, and we hope that UN will deliver justice to the victims of 1984 Sikh Genocide”.

Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh stated that grave human rights violations occurred against the Sikh community during November 1984 and thousands of Sikhs were butchered mercilessly in broad daylight throughout India because they were Sikhs. Those who were involved in the killings of the Sikhs have not been prosecuted and the victims are still seeking justice and “there is no hope for justice” from this system added Akal Takhat Jathedar.

Earlier the Sikh groups lead by Karnail Singh Peermohammad, President, AISSF met Jathedar Sri Akal Takhat Sahib and submiited report that more than million signatures have been collected on the “Sikh Genocide Petition”.

According to Karnail Singh Peermohammad, President, AISSF The “Sikh Genocide Petition” will be handed to Navi Pillay, UN Human Rights Chief by a delegation of Sikh NGOs including “Movement Against Atrocities & Repression” (MAR), SFJ, AISSF and Gurudwara representatives from Europe and North America. The Sikh Genocide Petition which has been signed by more than million Sikhs, requests the United Nations to investigate the systematic, intentional and deliberate killing of Sikhs carried out across India during the first week of November 1984 and to recognize the killings as “Genocide” under UN Convention on Genocide added Federation President.

29 years and 10 inquiry commissions later, Congress party leaders like Kamal Nath, Jagdish Tytler, Sajjan Kumar and Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan are free from prosecution and “we will not rest till we get the perpetrator’s” added Peermohammad.

Sikh groups are holding a Justice Rally outside UN in Geneva. The rally is being organized to ask the UN to honor its commitment on the issue of Sikh Genocide and to raise awareness among the world community about the November 1984 genocidal attacks on Sikhs. More than 10,000 Sikhs from across Europe and North America are expected to attend the Justice Rally in Geneva.
